Friday 13th November is World Kindness Day and although the term “kindness” seems to be thrown around a lot these days. I still think its power and incentive shouldn’t be over looked.

Kindness as weakness

I used to think growing up that being kind was my weakness, it left me vulnerable to people that were not so kind and often left me feeling hurt. But it turns out I got it all wrong and a few boundaries later, being kind was in fact my superpower.

The power of kindness

Now more than ever we never truly know what someone else is going through and an act of kindness at the right time can mean so much to someone. One example of this was me rushing to a new supermarket, anxious, overtired and overworked. It wasn’t a great day. I arrived to grab a trolley and at this particular supermarket you needed a two dollar coin to take one. It was the final straw after a tough few weeks and I nearly burst into tears. But a lady saw me and passed me a two dollar coin and said “enjoy your day”. Such a simple and kind act at the right moment made my day so much better. I left that two dollar coin in the trolley for someone else.

And guess what, I feel like kindness is contagious. We as people interacting like how it feels to be kind to one another and help and then the kindness keeps going. We get more people being considerate towards one another and making simple kind acts frequently. Another thing I have also noticed is that kindness attracts positivity and that a positive mindset often leads to great outcomes.

Be kind to yourself

I’ve also noticed that although I find it easy to be kind to other people being the perfectionist that I am, I am not always so kind to myself. I think it’s important to be kind to yourself and to not be so hard on yourself sometimes. I also teach this to my daughter who has inherited my perfectionist ways.

So on this world kindness day, be kind to yourself and others. Because in a world that’s forever changing that is one thing we can do.
